08th August 2007

After having a couple of days break, played for a couple of hours this evening. Ended up with $7 profit over 350 hands playing 13.07/12.5.

There were a couple of interesting situations that cropped up and these are shown in the Hand Histories below: -

The other player in this hand was at 74.25/4.04. I probably should have bet out on the flop but but with no flush and an unlikely Straight Draw I thought I was way ahead and wanted to lure hin in. I considered the possible Straight on the River and thought it was an unlikely holding so I made the call. Was this a correct play or should I have folded on the river.

Having hit top pair, top kicker on the flop and betting out and being reraised , I decided to fold to the Reraise putting him on a 9. Can any one advise whether or not this was the correct play

Hand 1 :

Tough spot. I would certainly be paying him off here. Villain could easily have made a hand that you beat on the river, or the turn, for that matter. (I see him playing the same way with a hand like AJ, JT,T8 etc). His call on the turn with a gutshot is worse than horrible. The good news is that it worked out so well for him this time, that he will keep doing it!

Hand 2 :

Unfortunately, the link for this hand appears to be broken

Hand 1 The thing is you want to lead on the flop . there are 2 reaons . The first is that generaly people will suspect more if you check the flop and then lead the turn . Generaly people dont suspect that you have trips if you bet the flop . I think that s what people say . Secondly if he is drawing , you wnat to make him pay for cards , . Also, imo with your figures i think you could step up to 50nl, theres a little more thinking going om and it looks pretty much like your a thinker

Hand 1: It doesn't look like you raised enough pre-flop. Make it 4BB + 1BB per limper. You should be betting this flop most times. You would bet if you missed so bet if you hit too. Plus, 74/4 players just love to call post-flop normally. He's going to call when you have J high on that boards, so make him call when you have top set too. I call the river.

Hand 2: Link not working. If you're getting a lot of pressure put on you when you hold just 1 pair it's often correct to let it go.

Hand 1 ) I dont think your betting near enough PF. I keep saying it there going to call 60c you gotta bet 1.20-1.50 use the x3 or x4 button. Bet proper like Martin said when you move up. On the flop its an ok check the board is not very scary. The turn you could bet more but ok. River easy call i probably woulda pushed his bet there.
Result hes dumb! Put it in your notes that he chases 4 outers on the turn.

The link is broke for the 2nd 1. Try betting more PF not standerd to what the room is if there betting 1 as a raise you bet 1.50 if there 80c bet 1.20 do that for a few sessions and i think you'll get better results. 40+vpip players are likely to hold any 2 cards make em pay to play a hand with you.
Best of luck

Thanks for the comments, I have fixed the link to the second hand.

I'll have a look into my bet sizing pre and post flop and make the appropriate adjustments

Hand 2 is tricky without knowing anything about the opponent. Some guys would bluff there on a dry paired board. Some players would never raise a 9 there, and some would raise a KQ or KJ type hand. Some would just min-raise a 9, or some would wait for the turn and then min-raise.

So therefore it's very opponent dependent and almost impossible to comment on without having some reads. I'm less inclined to believe he has a 9 when he raises this flop. However, he could put you on AK/AA and be raising hoping you'll shove. I think a fold is OK here, but against a lot of players I'm taking this hand further.
